What is Verkko-osuuskunta Kuuskaista?

And what are we doing?

Verkko-osuuskunta Kuuskaista (Network Co-operative Kuuskaista) is building fiber to the bulding (FTTB) and fiber to the home (FTTH) high speed multiservice (triple play) network in the area of Kuusiokunnat in Finland. Kuusiokunnat is formed by 6 municipalities: Kuortane, Alavus, Töysä, Ähtäri, Lehtimäki village of Alajärvi, Soini and is located about 350 km north of Helsinki. In this area of 3.409,2 km2 there lives about 30 000 people, which means about 10 000 households and 2000 (mainly) small business. This link gives you map about our operational area.

The 10 Gbps VPLS backbone www.6net.fi (provided by the backbone network of the municipalities) is connecting the village networks (build by Verkko-osuuskunta Kuuskaista) together and to the services. The 10 Mbps minimum (up to 1000 Mbps possible) connections between customers and our multiservice network is more than 20 times faster than a normal "broadband" (512 kbps ADSL) connection.

To us 256 kbps or 512 kbps is not broadband, but narrowband and definitely not enough for the needs of today and tomorrow. That's why Verkko-osuuskunta Kuuskaista doesn't use the term broadband, we are talking about REAL broadband, SUPER BROADBAND or even better, about multiservice IP-network. Our network is able to provide triple play services and new generation services for digi-tv, VOD, health care, security, distance learning, telework, etc. to the households and businesses in our region. Especially services that wouldn't be available without the network. There are people in the rural areas, who have to drive tens of kilometers in order to rent a DVD or to visit the tax office. But all this has been changed...

The network will follow the Open Access principle, meaning that it will be open to all operators and service providers. The role and responsibility of Verkko-osuuskunta Kuuskaista is to build, maintain and expand the network infrastructure, to act as a bridge between the service providers and our corporate and household customers. We are working very closely with and for our customers to make sure they can enjoy the services that are most important to them.

Multiservice network also means that many different kind of devices can use the network, in many different ways. The first thing that comes to your mind is of course a computer and you are right, a computer can really come to life with our multiservice network. But that's not the only way to enjoy the high speed network! Want to hook up your telephone and enjoy free phone calls? Don't know how to use a computer? No problem, plug in your TV and send email and surf the web (for example to pay your bills) or use it the "traditional" way and watch a movie. The possibilities are almost endless!

In the stage I (2004) we have had about 450 households in 13 villages connected to our network, for that we needed about 400 km of fiber optic cable. In the stage II (August 2004 - November 2006) we passed about 2 000 more households and used about 1500-2000 km more cable. It has been a large project, but we were not building the network just for the needs of today, but for the future as well. We want to enjoy high quality services the next 40 to 50 years.

In 2009 we have 1 500 customers connected with over 2 000 km of fiber. 2200 houses passed. We have several internet and IPTV providors. Our own IPTV service also collects all payble channels from different providors and local content to be seen with one set-op box ("Open IPTV"). Customer really can choose what services and providors he/she likes to use also in IPTV.

Kuuskaista starts 2012 several new projects in central of Finland, estimated houses passed will be 20 000 - 25 000 in the end of 2015. This link gives you some information about our operational area.

We are also one of the founders of Finnish Open Networks www.fionets.fi, that connects all western Finland fiber networks together. All service providors and customers have access to all of these networks. Customers totally 4 000.

To make sure you get quality, do it yourself!
